The project encompasses an area that extends well beyond that of Piazza Duca D'Aosta, in front of Milan's Central Station, as requested by the competition. After analysing the flows entering and leaving Milan, it was decided to abstractly translate the main routes towards the Station into lines with beams of light, targeting those key points approximately one kilometre apart from each other. Thus four laser lines, four beams of light, originating from Piazza Lagosta, Piazzale Loreto, Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Lima, converge in the project area — the Piazza — where they bounce off corresponding buildings before terminating on pylons placed at its centre, continuing in the form of optical fibres of the same colour, passing through certain areas of the underground metro below, and finally converging in a point of flashing blue light which, if stepped upon, suddenly switches off the entire installation. The flashing light signal, predominantly visible during dark hours or foggy days, thus becomes a guiding indicator of the position of the station, while the terminals (luminous tubes, traversed by optical fibres) together with the light signals embedded in the metro flooring, will form the permanent installation visible during daylight hours.
